INTRODUCTION HISTORY, GOMAL MEDICAL COLLEGE, DERA ISMAIL KHAN.
Gomal Medical College is located in D.I.Khan which is the southern most district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, situated on the right bank of River Indus. About 300 km south of Peshawar, on main Indus highway from Peshawar to Karachi. Population is more than 1.2 millions. Its catchment area comprises adjoining districts of Punjab, Baluchistan and South Waziristan and adjacent areas of Afghanistan. To the North East of it lies district Mainawali and to the East district Bakhar of Punjab across the river Indus. It is attached to district Dera Ghazi Khan in the south whereas bounded by South Waziristan Agency in the west along Afghanistan border. In the South West, it is attached to District Zobe of Baluchistan Province.
The Chief Minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa announced Gomal Medical College for D.I.Khan in a session of Provincial Assembly on 26th August 1998. The college was initially established in a portion of Central Library of Gomal University. Fifty seats were sanctioned for session 1998-99 and the College started on 11th January 1999.
Presently, it is located on North circular road with enough space and laboratories.
New purpose built building is under construction near Mufti Mehmood Teaching Hospital D.I.Khan. It is a project of 2100 millions in two phases and about 50% of work in phase I has been completed.
Admissions are done by Joint Admission Committee comprising of Principals of Public Sector Medical & Dental colleges.
The College was initially affiliated to Peshawar University, Peshawar. Since 2010 it is affiliated to Khyber Medical University, Peshawar. The College was permanently recognized by PM&DC in 2007.
Initially, the college intake was 50 students (Up to 2008). Now we are admitting 93 students per year. 350 students have graduated in eight batched so far.
More than 80 students have done post graduation including FCPS Part-I, USMLE, PLAB, M.Phil etc. two students passed FCPS Part-II. Two students are doing Ph.D in health sciences in UK under HEC scholarship programmee.
The college has been regularly publishing its scientific journal “Gomal Journal of Medical Sciences” since 2003, recognized by Pakistan Medical and Dental Council PM&DC, Higher Education Commission (HEC) and WHO. A student’s magazine HAYYAN is also regularly published by the college.
INTRODUCTION TEACHING HOSPITALS ,GOMAL MEDICAL COLLEGE, DERA ISMAIL KHAN
There are two teaching hospitals attached to Gomal Medical College. District Headquarter Teaching hospital (300 Beds) and Mufti Mehmood Memorial Teaching Hospital (200 Beds).
Both the Hospitals are recognized by PM&DC for undergraduate training and House Job.
Seven Departments have been recognized by College of Physicians & Surgeons of Pakistan (CPSP) for FCPS Part II training. These are Medicine, Surgery, Gynae/OBS, Ophthalmology, Pediatrics, ENT and Orthopedic. Presently Three Trainees are registered for F.C.P.S part II training.
Nephrology, Psychiatry, Dermatology, Cardiology, Urology, Pulmonology and Gastroenterology units are functional. The posts of teaching staff in Neurosurgery are advertised by Khyber Pakhtunkhwa PSC. The unit is presently run by General Surgeon and qualified neurosurgeon.
The purchase orders for CT scan at DHQ Teaching Hospital, D.I.Khan and MRI at Mufti Mehmood Teaching Hospital D.I.Khan have been placed and will be installed in this financial year INSHALLAH.
A new Institute DINAR (Dera Institute of Nuclear Medicine & Radiotherapy) has been established in the premises of Mufti Mehmood Memorial Teaching Hospital D.I.Khan. It has started OPD and will be starting admission very soon.
